It all happened around 3 in the morning. A gang of criminals attempted a robbery, but apparently failed, at the ATM of the Banco di Sardegna in Lei, a small town in the Marghine area.
The thieves first tried to blow up the ATM with a charge, then, failing in their attempt, they tried to break it open with an emery board. Despite their attempts, the device resisted and the criminals were forced to abandon the attempt and flee empty-handed. To escape easily and slow down the arrival of the police, the thieves also placed a chain with three-pointed nails on the road.
The ATM is located in the center of town, which increased the level of danger for citizens. The bomb squad and the Carabinieri of Macomer and the bomb squad immediately intervened on site, to secure the area and start the investigation.
The hunt for the gang is now on, while investigators are examining images from surveillance cameras and the explosive residue.
